With widely varying soil conditions across the markets were serve in North America and abroad, we have listened to growers who have repeatedly asked for a single knife solution. During the development process, we discovered inherent performance limitations using a single hydraulic cylinder to control both packing pressure and trip force simultaneously. In certain conditions, such as soft loamy soils, growers may require less packing pressure but, if there are also a lot of rocks, they may require higher trip force. A single cylinder makes achieving a proper balance difficult. Further, we often saw the opener have difficult time re-engaging after tripping with the single cylinder design. What’s the solution?

SMS Single Knife Opener

For growers worldwide looking for alternative seeding solutions to address different soil conditions and crops

  • Similar Robust, Heavy-Duty Frame as the proven Dual Knife Toolbar, with the same standard features and 5 year frame warranty
  • Three OEM Single Knife Opener choices are available from SeedMaster:
    • ½” Single Shoot, Single Knife (often preferred in heavy gumbo/clay ground where minimal disturbance is desired, and fertilizer is managed through separate applications like topdressing or fall-banding)
    • Dual Shoot 3.5” Paired Row with 0.75” Vertical Separation (suitable for crops and soil conditions where paired row openers are commonly used, for greater seedbed utilization)
    • Dual Shoot Side Band which places the seed above and to the side of the fertilizer, similar to the original SMD Dual Knife (suitable for crops and soil conditions where the original SMD dual knife openers are used, for precise seed and fertilizer placement and separation)
    • No-Opener Option: Other Opener Solutions will be available from aftermarket opener suppliers as they become available

SMS Single Knife Opener

  • Independent Trip: Patented Precision Feature to ensure the packing pressure and trip force are set and managed independent of each other. This is unlike other traditional single knife designs that utilize a single cylinder and often struggle to achieve a proper balance in trip vs packing performance
    • One Hydraulic Cylinder is used to set a fine-tuned trip force when dealing with a wide range soil and field conditions
      • Eliminates the potential for premature tripping and difficulty in re-engaging
    • A Second Hydraulic Cylinder is used to fine-tune packing pressure, on-the-go, from the in-cab monitor
  • Improved Travel of the Opener allows greater ground contouring, more consistent knife engagement, and uniform seed/fertilizer placement
  • Faster opener lift and lower times also increase precise placement
  • Packer tire options to suit each opener type and field condition
